Wanna be a cycler

Just found a great-lookin' blog about cycling. Have subscribed to its feed. The more I read, the more I'm gonna wanna buy. Good thing for my health and the environment. Not so good for the wallet or household storage.

Beer And Pasta Night at The Broadway

We checked out Beer And Pasta Night at The Broadway with the kids and another family. We hadn't been for a while because the menu had gone off, but this was a real treat. The food was cheap, edible and suited all ages. The drum 'n' bass music had our little ones shaking their groove things with best of them. The perfect way to spend a Thursday evening.

Bizarre incident in Rose St

Last Sunday morning, around 4.30am, two men started screaming at each other across the road:

"You call the fucking police!"

"No you call the fucking police!"

"If you come back here again I'm gonna kick your fucking head in."

Eventually one guy took off and the other guy ran around in his undies throwing all the first guy's stuff into the street, often bouncing off neighbours' cars.

A while later, four patrol cars of police arrived, had a laugh between themselves and took off. A few hours later, a garbage truck arrived and took all the stuff away.

I know the stuff had to come off the road and the guy who fled was probably very bad news, but did he forfeit all his property rights? Bizarre.

Man with three blogs

Not content with Life in Chippendale and Breakfast Bytes, I've started Lyric Of The Day.

This new blog won't necessarily be about music or lyrics that I like — just lyrics that seem to pop out of a song and hang in the air for moment, whether good, bad or ugly.

In starting this blog, the first thing I've learnt is that a lot of the music I listen to contains completely forgettable lyrics. For example, this morning the iPod shuffled onto Midnight Oil, and yes I loved it. But the lyrics were like a high school essay — no hidden layers, no double meanings, absolutely no subtedly. Definately not material that's fit for Lyric Of The Day.

Soni's tapas bar

I checked out Soni's tapas bar on King Street. Owned by a familiar face on the Newtown cafe scene, Soni's has been open just three months and seems to have attracted a large and loyal following if Friday night was anything to go by.

And it's easy to see why. This is the kind of venue us inner westies have previously had to travel to Darlinghurst to enjoy. Funky decor, pumping music, fast service and vibe galore. The menu offers tasty morsels like polenta cakes with anchovy and pesto, duck breast with pomegranate glaze and all sorts of little seafood delicacies. You won't find VB on the booze list here. It's all Belgian and German imports and the wine list is limited but equally satisfying.

If there's one criticism its that Soni's doesn't offer credit card facilities. This is a drawback given that guests are clearly intended to treat Soni's as not only somewhere to pop in for a late bite but the kind of place you can linger with friends over a dinner of mini-meals. The tapas plates range from about $7 to $13 so it can be a pricey night and, in the 21st century, I can't be the only one who frequently travels without cash.

Anyhow, Soni's is a welcome addition to the King Street landscape and somewhere I'll be heading back to.

Kidstuff

Thanks to M H Ward and Knitten' Kitten, we finally made it to Kidstuff, and what a find! It's the kind of toyshop that that nether adult nor child wants to leave.

Marian Street Park

A fight is brewing over Marian Street Park, that sliver of greenery behind Redfern Station.
