Party tricks
The location is a winner being in the cosy end of Chippendale, gifted with passing trade from the city as well as the local crowd. The art deco design looks sensational but somehow the Broadway Cafe never quite makes it in my books.
Nonetheless it is just around the corner so I decided to hold my round number birthday party there recently. The date was set, the per head cost established and the offer of a preliminary deposit deemed unnecessary until the week before. So I sent out the invitations and popped by three weeks shy of the party date to find that the owner had double-booked on me. On the same page as he'd taken down my details were those of another birthday girl. Plus the receipt for her deposit.
The owner apologised sheepishly for his mistake and offered me the next weekend. I had friends flying in from interstate with tickets already purchased so, fuming, I declined the offer. More than anything I no longer wanted to do business with this man. And the bad feeling sticks despite a hugely successful party at Soni's Newtown. Now there's a place I can highly recommend.
In short, I've blackbanned the Broadway Cafe. At least till the bad taste disappears.
