Global warming in Chippendale

According to this tool, the danger point — the moment at which rising flood waters (the blue layer on this map) cross Broadway into Chippendale — is when sea levels rise by 14m.

Keep driving those 4WDs, baby! Even when Ultimo is sinking into the Tasman, we'll be as safe as houses ;-)

(Not.)

NSW Greens public transport policy

Chris Harris has published the NSW Greens' public transport policy on his blog. At first glance, it looks very good. But Chris, I'll say it again: a blog without comments is just another name for a newsletter!

Our photos on a map

I've tried using Flickr's new "geotagging" feature to map the photos we took of Susan's 40th birthday and of Jude's 4th. More photos to come, but only some will be announced on this blog.

Cycling in Everleigh

Previously I have written about concerns that the Wilson St bike route could be under threat from the Redfern-Waterloo Authority plans for the area.

However, if you look at the RWA's new land use map for North Everleigh (PDF: 430KB), you can see the bike route is still there — but it has been moved about half a block, so it actually sits inside the former railyards.

Also, we are told there will be at least one and possibly two bike-friendly bridges over the railway lines (PDF: 13KB). They would link Darlington to Redfern.

Reading from the map, it seems the RWA also wants to build bike paths through The Block and on Lawson Street, which to my mind would only be possible if you eliminated a lane of car parking or traffic.

Deborah Mailman in Sydney Magazine

Deborah Mailman is one of those actors you can't help but warming to. Here's how she's portrayed in the September 2006 issue of Sydney Magazine:

Living in Chippendale with her partner of almost a year, fellow Queenslander and advertising man Matthew Coonan, allows her to reach many places on foot. "I feel far more comfortable in an inner-city place. I can walk to Newtown, Glebe or the city. That plays a big part in my happiness."

She also feels closer to her Aboriginal heritage than in other cities. I'm living a stone's throw from The Block in Redfern, I love being part of that community even though I'm not one of the locals. Just seeing my own mob on the street every day is a great comfort."

And later:

In Mount Isa, there was a ready sense of community. That's something she has tried to replicate in Chippendale. They use her name at the corner shop and at the local cafe where they know just how she takes her coffee (latte, two sugars).

That's exactly how it feels here.

Of course, Deborah also talks about moving to Queensland or Melbourne once her child is born, but I'll just skip over that bit, eh?
