Greens Councilor Chris Harris and Darlinghurst resident Matthew Drake-Brockman are challenging the CUB development in the Land & Environment Court on the grounds that it will be wasteful of water and energy.
At last, a CUB
campaign I can support.
Long-time readers will know I've got no patience for NIMBY arguments against tall towers and high-density living at CUB.
It's the city! And sharing our neighbourhood with lots of human beings is one of the secrets to bringing it to life.
However, I believe every development — whether a high-rise in Chippendale or a McMansion in Castle Hill — should be judged in part on its environmental efficiency.
Why single out development for judgment? Because the decisions we make now abut housing stock will affect the decisions that occupants make about their resource use for as long as the buildings stand.
Chris and Matthew argue that a sustainable development at CUB could use much less water and energy. As long as their measure is consumption
per head — rather than total consumption, which can be reduced simply by moving the human beings and their resource use to another suburb — then they have my complete support.
