 Life in Chippendale

In which we bang on about landmarks, eyesores, politics, controversies, incidents, events, people, restaurants, pubs, shops, urban history and development affecting the south Sydney area, or anything or anywhere else...

Cheapest booze in Chippendale

Search for boxes of James Squire, Kilkenny or Hoegaarden. Or whatever you fancy.

Farewell Fanny & Charlie

I can't believe it! Fanny and Charlie have sold The Original Corner Shop & Laundrette. Charlie told me they're going to enjoy a break now, which of course they've well and truly earned. Good luck with your next adventure, and thank you for years of warm service.

The Darlo Peace Train

Today I saw our eldest, Jude, at his Christmas concert at Darlington Public School. Last week it was the turn of our middle child, Asher, at the Boundary Lane Children's Centre. I don't have much to add except that both experiences were a delight. To quote one of Jude's fellow students, "all aboard the Darlo Peace Train!"

Finally we have vision! Now for execution...

Finally, we have a plan for transport in Sydney. If implemented, it will be a genuine first step towards where we need to be.

However, that's a pretty big 'if'. NSW Labor seems to struggle with large projects. The north-south rail link has been promised so many times it's starting to sound like a platform announcement.

Fingers crossed this will be different...

Carols in Victoria Park

Newtown may have a little difficulty in relishing Christmas but we in Chippendale can show them we can crack out a carol more-or-less in tune this Saturday night at 8PM (Jazz to warm up from 7PM).

I think the night is being hosted by St Barnabas Church. Does this mean a seductive "Santa Baby Hurry Down the Chimney Tonight" will not be on the choral sheet?

Drag picnic rug and neighbours. Oh and theres fireworks too, so if you don't come along you'll just think your house is blowing up...

Christmas decorations

A nice photo essay about neighbourhood Christmas decorations from Nosey In Newtown.

This one is dear to my heart because two of our three children under six are currently spending most of their wakeful hours dismantling our tinsels and tree...

Needless to say, we're going slowly mad. No wonder they call it "stressmess". :-)

Tweaked the template

I've put the name of the author beneath the post's title so it's immediately obvious whose work you're reading.

I've also put the horizontal line after the comments because some people have been accidentally commenting on the wrong post.

The template doesn't look as shmick as it did (I'm no graphic designer) but hopefully these tweaks will make everything a little clearer.

SMH maintains the pressure

It looks like the City of Sydney gave the SMH exclusive access to its new plan for the CBD before the official launch on Monday.

The plan is thrilling in its audacity, but I don't see how our three layers of government can pull it off.

Kevin07 will be reluctant to put his hand in his pocket until we know whether the world is heading towards a recession. NSW Labor believes the purpose of infrastructure is to increase car and water use, not decrease it. And, without their support, our Lord Mayor will have to play the role of lobbyist as much as legislator.

Still, one can always hope. After all, with her Small Bars Bill, our Lord Mayor showed how her dual role as the state member for Sydney does allow her to exert some influence over NSW policy.

Our boy the DVD star

We already knew that Aunty Wendy's Mob were filming their new music video at Darlington Public, where our eldest is schooled. This week we received a copy on DVD. What a hoot! Looks like the rugrats had a ball. :-)
